Saint Augustine

Description

St. Augustine Grass is a coarse grass native to the tropics. It is used in many tropical regions of the world as a lawn, cover crop, and erosion control tool, since it is hardy in the tropics and it requires minimal maintenance.

Maintenance

  • Water your new lawn to keep it moist for a period of 2 weeks or until sod is rooted. (Do not waste water by over watering!)
  • Mow as soon as your new lawn is rooted - at the recommended height (see table below)
  • Fertilize your lawn once rooted.

Characteristics

  • attractive color and vigorous year round growth in frost-free climates.
  • easy to mow.
  • most shade tolerant of all permanent hot climate lawn grasses.
  • performs well in wet soils even under salt spray.
  • ill-adapted as far north as Atlanta and will usually be killed by cold in the middle-South
  • St. Augustinegrass is most often propagated as sod.

Once your lawn is established and well rooted follow the directions to the right to insure the best possible lawn of a lifetime!

Mow when grass is this tall: 4"10cm
Set cutting height of mower to: 3"7.5cm

Mow at 3 inch height. Mow no more than 1/3 of the leaf off at one mowing. Use sharp mower blades.

Water to supplement rainfall shortages only. Avoid fixed timer irrigation settings. Saint Augustine best performs when it receives approximately 1 inch of water per week. If one or more inches of rainfall occur in a week, additional irrigation is not necessary. (Example: if 1/2 inch of rain occurs within a growing week, apply 1/2 inch by irrigation.) Do not waste water by over watering.
